Our system is broken. The plan I have outlined is my first guess as to what we need to do to accomplish this. I do not ever believe I know the answer when I look at a complex problem the first time (although I have been seriously thinking about this for several years). I think problem solving is like a limit function. You take your best educated guess as to the problem and you then make your best guess as to how to solve it. Most of the time both the original assumption and the solution are either incomplete or wrong. As we collect information our view of the problem changes and our solution becomes more refined. As we collect information the standard deviation becomes smaller, and our solution becomes closer to reality which we never fully realize. The best we can hope for is the best approximation of both. It will always be changing, and our solution must evolve with it.
Similarly, our Supreme Court must interpret and adjust our laws to our ever-changing world. When I was 8, I met with my Rabbi. We were reformed Jews. He told me that the difference between Reformed Jews and Orthodox and Conservative Jews is that we reformed Jews believe the Rabbi needs to interpret the Talmud based on the times. For example, pork was unhealthy. We were not able to cook it at a high enough temperature to protect us from Trichinosis so that it was safe to eat. That is no longer the case so we now believe we can now eat pork even though it is not considered Kosher in our dietary laws.
In the 1800’s it was more dangerous to have an abortion than to have a child. Now abortions are safer than delivering a child. We needed people to have guns in the 1800’s because we expected our citizens to be our militia. That is no longer true so why do we need AK 47’s? We certainly do not need them to hunt.
My hope is that you will be part of the process of creating this party. I value your input and hope as we work through this together so that we can come up with a plan that will accomplish our goals as citizens of the United States and protect our democracy.
